OTTAWA, ON – The grassroots campaign OpenSME.ca, launched to ensure Canada’s open banking rollout includes business accounts from the start, has gained significant momentum since its debut earlier this month.
Founded by Eric Saumure, co-founder of Ottawa-based accounting firm Zenbooks, the campaign calls for three key actions:
Include business accounts in the initial phase of Canada’s open banking implementation.
Set a clear, enforceable timeline for rollout.
Provide funding for privacy and security education so small businesses can use open banking safely.
Since launch, the campaign has:
Been featured in BetaKit’s coverage of the movement for SME inclusion in open banking.
Welcomed new official partners/allies including Ignition, Huumans, and Remitian.
Received endorsement from Fintechs Canada, the national association advocating for a competitive financial sector.
Earned public support from accounting industry leaders Blake Oliver and Ryan Lazanis.

“Open banking can transform how small businesses operate, lowering costs, speeding up payments, and enabling better financial tools,” said Eric Saumure. “If we leave business accounts out, we risk delaying these benefits for the very companies that drive Canada’s economy.”
